Source integrity: one person, one record

Our Source Integrity & Anti-Duplication Protection makes sure each person in an old record is linked to one profile only, across all of Welsh genealogy.

Y broblem The problem

One record, three people

Most family-history websites share one basic flaw: the same record can be wrongly attached to several different people. The result is conflicting trees, duplicate people and research you can't rely on.

Without protection

A baptism record from 1845 names "John Evans, son of David Evans and Mary Thomas". Three researchers attach it to three different John Evans profiles. Now three people claim to be the same child.

With protection

One researcher links the same 1845 baptism to their John Evans as the "child". No other John Evans can now claim to be the child in that record, so others must find different evidence for their John Evans.

Yr ateb The solution

Each role in a record is claimed once

Every role in a historical record can be claimed by one person profile only. That stops, for good, the common mistake of attaching one record to several people.

One profile per role

Each role in a source can be linked to one person profile only. Once claimed, it's protected.

How they're named

We record exactly how each person is named in the original source, keeping the context and avoiding mix-ups.

Settled together

When there's a clash, the community weighs the evidence and agrees the right link, in the open.

Confidence levels

Every source link is rated certain, probable or possible, so you know how strong the evidence is.

Reasons on show

Every decision is written down with its reasoning, so future researchers can see why a link was made.

Built into the database

Rules in the database itself block duplicate role links, so it stays consistent as the site grows.

What happens next

How voting works →
Two researchers want the same record

If two researchers both believe their John Evans belongs to the same record, they put their evidence to the community. Through discussion and source checking, the community decides which John Evans the record really means, and the question is settled for good.

One person, many sources

Each role in a source is unique, but a person can gather evidence from many sources over their life: birth records, marriage certificates, their children's baptisms, property deeds, wills and more. Together they build a full, well-sourced profile.
